Depois da Tempestade / After the Storm (12) is one in a series of works Rivane Neuenschwander made by exposing maps of New York State to the natural elements over the duration of the rainy season in her native Brazil. She first placed paper maps on wire screens outside of her studio in Brazil and let the paper slowly degrade under the force of the rains. She then assembled the fragments on colorfully painted boards before painting new borders and roadways atop the reassembled pieces. Reshaping geography through a type of "poetic topology," these rain maps chronicle cartographic erosion, as landmasses appear to disintegrate into patchy lagoons and boundaries are washed away, only to reemerge as fantastic new territories. The works probe the tension between the forces of nature and the human systems devised to order and understand them. [Permanent collection label, 2022]
