Carolee Schneemann

Parallel Axis

1973 / 2009

image alt

Carolee Schneemann was an experimental visual artist known for her multimedia works that focus on the body, sexuality, and gender. This photomontage documents one of her “body actions,” performed in this case on the railroad track near her home in upstate New York. Foregrounding the artist’s own naked figure in relation to the built and natural environment, the work exemplifies Schneemann’s practice of asserting herself as both
image and image-maker, challenging long-held traditions of women as passive objects of a male-dominated gaze. Conveying a sense of bodily freedom but also precariousness, the image alludes to the cultural cliché of the woman tied to the track who is need of rescue, yet here the artist’s pose also suggests a self-realized vitality and control.
