David Goldblatt

In the Katkat Valley, near Fort Beaufort

23 February 2006

image alt

Long known for his small-scale black-and-white photography critically documenting the political complexities of South Africa, artist David Goldblatt turned in the 1990s to large-format color photography. In the Katkat Valley, near Fort Beaufort shows an expansive vista of a lush mountainous landscape in stark contrast to the barbed-wire fence and dilapidated gate blocking public access in the foreground of the composition. An election poster for the ANC (African National Congress), the party that made equitable land redistribution a major political issue following the end of apartheid in 1994, is prominently displayed on the fence, suggesting ironic commentary on the political realities of post-apartheid politics.
